The Vice Barons - Vice Barons Meet ... The King of Fuzz. Screaming Apple EP.

Back in the late 1980/early 90s legendary Radio DJ John Peel would often start his programme with the promise of 'more boring Belgians'. This would usually herald the playing of some turgid, sub-Throbbing Gristle, 'dance' track with a pounding backbeat and upfront porno-sampled vocals. Which seemed to last for years and years. The Vice Barons are not those boring Belgians. A surf, fuzz, instrumental riot from the low countries, they are the perfect antidote to the cliche of the 'boring Belgian'. Here, they tackle four songs made 'famous' by Davie Allan, the king of fuzz guitar. Enjoy.

Gasoline - Gasoline - Estrus Records ES 1243.

I know it's kind of obvious, but it wasn't until re-listening to this recently that the penny dropped about the similarities between Gasoline and G***** W***. It's not just the country of origin. The dynamic is also similar. I'd not picked it up from the only other record of theirs I have, the ... actually, I'm talking shit here. I just went and had a look at the post for their Goner single and I've made the Guitar Wolf comparison in extremely large letters, underlined in crayon and highlighted in bright yellow. Alcohol, kids. It's a good job I never really warmed to glue sniffing. Enjoy.

Gasoline from OUT THERE in Japan have been hit very hard with the Guitar Wolf stick but have added a wah wah element to keep us interested. Released on Eric Friedl's Goner Records and given the Goner corporate look. A Good corporate look.

Bassholes - Deaf Mix Vol. 3. In The Red Records LP ITR 049. 320K Vinyl Rip (1997).

Another cover stolen from the internet but that's the way it goes when you're too poor to be able to afford a decent A3 scanner (sob sob, boohoo for me). Here's BassHoles tremendous third LP, Deaf Mix Vol. 3. I've no idea where the cover parody comes from, but if it's not a parody/homage then I'm a randy Dutch man. BassHoles for the uninitiated are a two-man blues band featuring Don Howland on guitar and yelling and Lamont "Bim" Sherman on the traps. Howland writes the sarky, corruscating lyrics. I cannot recommend them highly enough. Go buy the vinyl. Enjoy.

The A-Bones - World's Greatest Sinner - Giant Claw Records GCS-010 7"

First new upload in nearly a year. What a lazy bastard I am. I'll be sticking more new stuff up as I work my way through my record collection, but I don't have that much free time these days so it'll be drip, drip. I'll also be upgrading past postings. I bought a record cleaner and have worked my way through all my sevens, so I'll be rerecording everything. Glutton for punishment.

Here are The A-Bones on Australia's imperious Giant Claw records. It's on lovely, garish vinyl, and it's pretty much what you'd expect from an A-Bones. Special guest stars on each side: Timothy Carey on the A, Peter Holsapple on the B. It's all good.

Enjoy.

The Astronauts - The Big Sound of The Astronauts. Pin Up Records 7". PIN UP 95-025.

I was fortunate enough to see this German surf band supporting The Phantom Surfers at The Frat Shack in Euston Station, London. I hadn't heard them before that night and it's fair to say they blew me away with how good they were. They wore costumes as well. Costume-based surf bands are The Best. Enjoy.

One of a billion bands called The Astronauts, this bunch were from Germany, are still going, and are fantastic. They also play beautifully raw surf music. I saw them the day after Kurt Cobain died, supporting The Phantom Surfers in the cavernous but tiny nightclub built into the frontage of Euston railway station in London. (Out of Marks and Spencers, towards Euston Road, on the left and upstairs. I think it's an okay-for-London Fullers pub now). They wore space-men outfits and were super tight. I regret not interviewing them, but I was a. excited about seeing The Phantom Surfers for the first time and b. too drunk.
